The QFF Energy Savers team recently hosted a webinar regarding Hydrogen as a potentially valuable energy resource for use on-farm with Dr Neil Thompson from ITM Power.
Neil has undertaken award-winning research at QUT Australia and KIT Germany in his role as Adjunct Associate Professor with the Institute for Future Environments (IFE). He has developed a number of local reference sites for ITM’s rapid response PEM electrolysers across the mobility, renewable chemistry and power to gas sectors in partnership with key international clients.

Neil gave an introduction to Hydrogen and outlined its potential contribution to the Australian energy mix including its practical application on-farm. The webinar discussed the need for a transition to a circular economy while integrating sustainable design. Produced on farm, it could provide additional benefits such as:
- Replacing LPG and fuel oil for drying or heating;
- Lower cost and more versatile storage than batteries in many applications;
- Waste heat to cooling via absorption chillers;
- Hot water as by-product for pre-heating, processing and wash down;
- A fuel source for vehicles; and
- Potential for other revenue streams from by products such as O2.
The webinar coincided with the recent release of the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA)’s Hydrogen Deployment Funding Round to stimulate investment in the production of hydrogen with electrolysers greater than 5MW, sourcing only renewable energy with the aim of reducing the cost to $2 per kilogram. The Clean Energy Finance Corporation has also recently announced an Advancing Hydrogen Fund, with up to $300m in loans available for new hydrogen projects.
