- Following SEQ rainfall and flooding, grants of up to $75K are available for affected producers to hire or purchase equipment and materials, clean up, remove debris, replace fencing and other costs associated with the recovery process. - Energex published their SEQ Flood Event Restoration Plan on 2 March. The Power Outage Finder can be found with the Restoration Plan HERE. This site provides important information and contact numbers in relation to safety and reminders of the process to follow for reconnection.
- Flood impacted farmers in SEQ can inform DAF of damage and losses via a survey which can be found HERE. The information provided via this survey will ensure DAF is able to capture relevant information required to prepare applications for assistance more quickly to support recovery.
- Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) was recently confirmed in 14 piggeries across QLD, NSW and VIC. Biosecurity QLD is working with the operators of the piggery after confirming the diagnosis. JEV is a category 1 restricted matter. Under QLD legislation, if the presence of this disease is suspected in any species of animal, it must be reported it to Biosecurity QLD on 13 25 23 or contact the Emergency Animal Disease Watch Hotline on 1800 675 888.
- Australia’s Acting Chief Medical Officer has declared the unfolding situation in Australia concerning the Japanese encephalitis virus a Communicable Disease Incident of National Significance. Read media release HERE.
- The National Farmers’ Federation is responding to farmer needs by supporting the development of a farm-friendly tool that shows how the natural resources of soil, waterways, productive plants, animals, and ecological health can be connected and accounted for, in terms of farm productivity and profit. NFF see Farming for the Future as playing an active role in helping farmers combat climate change and biodiversity loss without sacrificing production or farm business performance. HERE
- DAF’s Hermitage Research Facility Schools Plant Science Competition offers engaging ways for students to gain understanding and skills in key areas identified within the Australian science curriculum. Encouraging the next generation of people who will be involved in agricultural/science careers is crucial to how we will face the future and is a key purpose of the competition. - The QLD Organics Strategy 2022–2032 outlines how the QLD Government plans to improve the management of organic materials over the next ten years. The Strategy is supported by the Organics Action Plan which details how we will work together to reduce the amount of organic material that is generated and subsequently disposed to landfills. Starting Monday 21 March Queenslanders are invited to join the 3-week, Love Food Hate Waste Challenge that focuses on small changes that households can make to cut down the amount of food waste generated.
- DAF is seeking comment on an Issues Paper that will contribute to the review of the Farm Business Debt Mediation Act 2017. The Act requires a review to be conducted by June 2022 on whether its provisions remain appropriate. Consultation closes 25 March 2022. - This year’s TropAG International Agricultural Conference will be held in Brisbane from 31 October to 2 November. It will incorporate AgFutures, HarlanIV, and four other symposia themes. This year, with TropAg running in conjunction with the 4th Jack R Harlan International Symposium (HarlanIV), delegates will have the opportunity to look into agricultural trajectories of the past as well as the future.
